Lyrics

Steeplechase

A change of habit
Used to go bar-hopping
You started church-shopping, did ya?
It's been a problem
Finding one to fit ya
You didn't feel good, did ya?

CHORUS

It's a steeplechase
Blame your failures on
Churches where you've gone
Steeplechase
Ice cold Christian fakes
Turn to frosted flakes

You like the big ones
Worship incognito
Your problems ain't gettin' solved
You try a small one
Oops you must retreat-o
You'd rather not get involved

(CHORUS)

A Sunday morning
Get a drink of water
It's getting much hotter, huh?
You won't go back there
Must've been the sermon
You didn't like squirmin', huh?

(CHORUS)

Notes and Interpretations

There are two types of races referred to as the steeplechase.

  1. A horse race across a tract of land or on a race course with ditches, hedges, etc to jump. The name originally came from races of this type where the church steeple was the goal, ie chasing after the steeple.
  2. A cross-country foot race. Some times it is a track race of roughly 800 to 2600 metres in length with hurdles.

In the case of both races, the distances are longer than a sprint and jumping is a key feature.

This song is about those folks who are in search of a comfort church where they are not challenged spiritually. Through the satirical nature of the song, it is apparent that Steve is saying this is a Bad Thing®.
