Lyrics

Bouquet

written by Steve Taylor

She was the one
Who caught the bouquet
The best of her best friend's wedding day

She was the one
Who caught the bouquet
A token that God must want it that way

And on the quest for her Mr. Right
She said, "I do" where the lonely give in
They were married on the way, and oh,
Nothing's sadder than the words,
"It might have been"

He was the one
But promises dull
When Jesus becomes expendable

Expecting to find
What never was there
But doesn't it still beat solitaire?

She'd heard that time turns desire to love
And that the Lord had it all in control
So marry two half people, and oh,
Shouldn't one make the other whole?

Swallowing hard, 'cause you knew better before
Desperate for someone to blame
And does it matter that he's gone again?
And nothing's sadder than the words,
"It might have been"

She was the one
The bouquet deceived
Believer who never could believe

And now she's the one
Who's lonely again
She's wondering how it might've been

She was the one
Who caught the bouquet
The night of her sister's wedding day

She was the one
Who caught the bouquet
A token that God must want it that way

She started looking for the "Mister Right"
But the "Miss" wasn't ready then
They were married anyway and oh
Nothing's sadder than the words
"It might have been"

He was the one
But she couldn't sense
His Jesus was just a reference for the wife

Expecting to find
What couldn't be there
Assuming he'd still beat solitaire

They thought that time would turn the lust to love
They thought the other person had control
But marry two half people and oh,
Neither one could make the other whole

Swallowing hard, 'cause you knew better before
Stuck between your heart and your head
It doesn't matter that he's gone again
There's nothing sadder than the words,
"It might have been"

She was the one
The bouquet deceived
Believer that never could believe she was loved

And now she's the one
Who's lonely again
She's wondering how it might have been

Notes and Interpretations

Steve reworked the lyrics to this song after the Jeremiah People had recorded it. The reworked lyrics, which saw a copyright renewal in 1988, appeared on both Steve's version and Sixpence None The Richer's version.
