An extremely gifted artist and teacher, Wendy-Ann Keeton Soucie, (Borden), while caring for a young, pre-school age family, spent over 16 hours completing this exquisite one-of-a-kind broach made of wood. It was presented to me as a gift from the MFRC Board of Directors after my presentation to them at CFB Borden.
This highly detailed, tiny replica (2.5" X 2.5") of the cover of my first book, Hurry Up and Wait (released in 1994) really touched my heart. I'm not one to outwardly show my emotions, but to think that Wendy-Ann took so much time out of her very busy schedule to create something that I will always treasure touched me deeply. After all these years, I still show this gift to others at every opportunity and it was the first time I recognized the wonderful talents military wives possess and that I needed to showcase their talents whenever I could.
Created by Maureen Mitchell (Ottawa). These permastone "Troopies", originally made as presents for friends, are becoming quite popular and Maureen's earrings always drawing attention. She has now added broaches and fridge magnets to her collection. These treasures are hand carved, left to dry overnight and then hand painted with acrylics.
