Preferably a little worn, with a few smudges here and there. Why? Because it should be read by everyone who has a family member that has experienced trauma. The books authors, Michelle D. Sherman, Ph.D and her mother DeAnne M. Sherman have tapped into a need for teens that is universal. This book is a teens guide to living with a parent who has experienced trauma. In my opinion, anyone who has been on a tour to a war torn area comes home a little different. How different depends on their experiences while they have been in theatre, their ability to handle stressors and their outlook on life. DND has instituted a program to support our service members who are dealing with an occupational stress injury called Operational StressInjury Social Support. Under that umbrella they have established a Family Peer Support program with counselors on six bases throughout Canada. However, nothing is in place to support the children of our military families who are also in need of support. Like divorces where children sometimes incorrectly blame themselves, the same can be said of some children that see a parent return from tour not quite the same as when he/she left who wonder what they did to cause this change. Their concerns need to be met, they need a voice and Michelle and DeAnne have not only given them that voice, but have validated the feelings they have in dealing with this stressor. Parents would be wise to read this book to better understand what our children think and feel. Dr. Michelle Sherman is a clinical psychologist and the Director of the Family Mental Health Program at the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Medical Centre; she is also the co-chair of the Family Studies team of the South Central Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and a clinical associate professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Centre. Her mother, DeAnne Sherman, is a teacher with over 40 years of experience educating, mentoring and empowering teenagers. This is a unique, first-of-its-kind book that honestly and gently addresses key issues in dealing with a parent who has experienced trauma. An important resource for anyone working with trauma, this interactive book includes clear information and opportunities for self-expression. Accolades have poured in from a wide variety of professionals from educators, chaplains, psychologists, a fire department captain, counselors, family physician, head of a mental health disaster team etc. Testimonials outnumber the space available with this column but I must share a few with you: Helps families learn to cope with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and to put skills into practice for more joy-filled lives.
