The Garden
By Julie Doherty
As I plant my flower garden
And you’re so far away
I can’t recall ever missing you
The way that I do today.
Each year you’ve been here with me
As we put the garden in
You know I love to ‘supervise’
That’s the way that it’s always been.
But now it’s up to me dear
To make the flowers grow.
I know you’d laugh to see me
With my garden hat and hoe.
The sun warms my back as I bend down
Digging my hands in the dirt
I feel your presence within me
And my heart feels glad but hurt.
I miss you all the time you know
You’re always in my thoughts
I’ll have to plant for certain
A bunch of forget-me-nots.
And as each flower opens
And grows to be so strong
I know that you’ll be home soon
And time won’t seem so long.
