One Thing On Top Of Another

Sometimes it’s just one thing on top of another!  At least that’s what the framed greeting card says that hangs on the wall right next to my computer.  It shows four plump little robins perched on each other’s head with the bottom bird balancing the load as he sits on a lattice fence amid colorful apple blossoms.

This card was a gift from my best friend several years ago and so aptly expressed what I was feeling at that particular time – as I seemed to be dealing with one stressor after another.  I was so touched by her zeroing in on my state of mind and providing just the right card to bring a smile to my face that I framed it and it hangs on the wall as a daily reminder.    A reminder that yes, at times, when you are dealing with one stressor, another can be sent your way and perhaps you feel that you just can’t handle any more – but we all possess an inner strength that surfaces when we need it the most.  The stacking birds also represent the ability to stay focused and balanced and that is how to deal with many stresses we are faced with.

It’s amazing how a simple card with just the right words can lift your spirits. Sometimes it’s not the words that touch your heart but the fact that someone was thinking of you and took the time to send it. Over the years I’ve made a point of sending cards whenever the mood strikes me and the ones I like best of all are the ‘Thinking of You’ cards, which are sent for no special occasion.   To receive such a card really makes my day.

A couple of years ago when a friend mentioned a computer greeting card program, I was quite interested as I listened to her describing all the features of that particular program.  I have to say that it was absolutely the best investment I’ve made in terms of computer programs.   What I like the most about it is the fact that you can personalize each card – include the person’s name; write a very personal message; even include personal photos right in the card - and the graphics offer tons of choices.   You can create something sentimental, funny or serious and there are so many choices to draw from including all the special holidays and many general themed graphics.

One other important advantage is the cost per card – much lower than the average $3 - $5.00 cost of a store bought card today. This hobby has become so popular that you can easily purchase a package of blank greeting cards designed specifically for these computer programs.

I found that because the cost per card was lower, I was able to send out many more cards than I normally did and the recipients really appreciated getting a card designed specifically for them.

Also, if there is a sudden need for a card I don’t have to try and find time to go shopping for one.  I can just sit at the computer and create it for whatever occasion is required. There are several create-a-card programs on the market but I’ve had no need to purchase another.  The program I have also creates business cards, posters, letterhead – just about all you would need for home use.

It didn’t take long before the program paid for itself and even after using it on a regular basis for several years, I still haven’t come close to using even a fraction of the graphics available.

As I sit typing this column and take another look at the birds in the framed picture, I suddenly realize the remarkable talents of the creator of this card.  Each bird is wearing a different facial expression with the bottom bird rather dismal at having to shoulder such a load while the bird on top is bright eyed and obviously very happy with his position.   The title ‘Pecking Order’ is so appropriate.

How I’d love to meet this lady who has captured so much in her drawing – understanding, humor, and wisdom to name only a few. Sometimes we feel like we’re on the bottom of things, but other times we are on top of the world.  If I could share a cup of tea with her, I would quickly point to the bird on the top and say – that’s me!!!
